Clausal Analysis of First-order Proof Schemata

چکیده
Proof schemata are a variant of LK-proofs able to simulate various induction schemes in first-order logic by adding so called proof links to the standard first-order LK-calculus. Proof links allow proofs to reference proofs thus giving proof schemata a recursive structure. Unfortunately, applying reductive cutelimination is non-trivial in the presence of proof links. Borrowing the concept of lazy instantiation from functional programming, we evaluate proof links locally allowing reductive cut-elimination to proceed past them. Though, this method cannot be used to obtain cut-free proof schemata, we nonetheless obtain important results concerning the schematic CERES method, that is a method of cut-elimination for proof schemata based on resolution. In “Towards a clausal analysis of cut-elimination”, it was shown that reductive cut-elimination transforms a given LK-proof in such a way that a subsumption relation holds between the preand post-transformation characteristic clause sets, i.e. the clause set representing the cut-structure of an LK-proof. Let CLpφ1q be the characteristic clause set of a normal form φ1 of an LK-proof φ that is reached by performing reductive cut-elimination on φ without atomic cut elimination. Then CLpφ1q is subsumed by all characteristic clause sets extractable from any application of reductive cut-elimination to φ. Such a normal form is referred to as an ACNF and plays an essential role in methods of cut-elimination by resolution. These results can be extended to proof schemata through our “lazy instantiation” of proof links, and provides an essential step toward a complete cut-elimination method for proof schemata.

CERES in Propositional Proof Schemata
Cut-elimination is one of the most famous problems in proof theory, and it was defined and solved for first-order sequent calculus by Gentzen in his celebrated Hauptsatz. Ceres is a different cut-elimination algorithm for firstand higher-order classical logic. It is based on the notion of a characteristic set of clauses which is extracted from a proof in sequent calculus and is always unsatisfi...
متن کاملA Non-clausal Connection Calculus
A non-clausal connection calculus for classical first-order logic is presented that does not require the translation of input formulae into any clausal form. The definition of clauses is generalized, which may now also contain (sub-) matrices. Copying of appropriate (sub-)clauses in a dynamic way, i.e. during the actual proof search, is realized by a generalized extension rule. Thus, the calcul...

Most efficient fully automated theorem provers implement proof search calculi that require the input formula to be in a clausal form, i.e. disjunctive or conjunctive normal form. The translation into clausal form introduces a significant overhead to the proof search and modifies the structure of the original formula. Translating a proof in clausal form back into a more readable non-clausal proo...
متن کاملnanoCoP: A Non-clausal Connection Prover
Most of the popular efficient proof search calculi work on formulae that are in clausal form, i.e. in disjunctive or conjunctive normal form. Hence, most state-of-the-art fully automated theorem provers require a translation of the input formula into clausal form in a preprocessing step. Translating a proof in clausal form back into a more readable non-clausal proof of the original formula is n...
متن کاملNew Techniques in Clausal Form Generation
In automated reasoning it is common that first-order formulas need to be translated into clausal normal form for proof search. The structure of this normal form can have a large impact on the performance of first-order theorem provers, influencing whether a proof can be found and how quickly. It is common folklore that transformations should ideally minimise both the size of the generated claus...
